The Junior Lifeguarding Camp is designed to guide youths ages 11-14 to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The course focuses on building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills of future lifeguards.
Prerequisites: Before entering into the Junior Lifeguarding course, participants must:
- Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side.
- Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards continuously while using a pull, break, kick and glide sequence.
- Complete the Water Competency Sequence:
- Step into the water from the side and completely submerge.
- Maintain position for one minute by treading water or floating (or a combination of the two).
- Rotate one full turn and orient to the exit.
- Level off and swim on the front or back for 25 yards.
- Exit without using a ladder or steps.
Benefits of the Junior Lifeguard Camp: Development of swimming skills and practicing in-water rescues in preparation of becoming a certified lifeguard. Teamwork and leadership skills necessary for future lifeguard candidates. Introduction to First Aid/CPR/AED knowledge and skills. Instruction and guidance from a Red Cross certified Lifeguard Instructor. Shadow experience from certified lifeguards at local pools. A certificate of completion for participants who successfully completed the course.
- This certificate does not indicate that the person is trained to be a lifeguard, and there is no validity period. *
Please Note: A minimum of 5 participants is required to hold a class.
